Position Summary
Women’s World Banking (WWB) is seeking a Senior Insurance Expert to provide strategic and technical leadership across multiple insurance‑focused initiatives. The role will support the design, structuring, and scaling of inclusive insurance solutions that strengthen financial resilience for low‑income women, smallholder farmers, and informal entrepreneurs, while ensuring commercial viability, regulatory alignment, and operational sustainability for partner financial institutions and insurers.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Insurance Product Design & Structuring
- Support in the design and refinement of inclusive insurance products (e.g., health, climate, hospitalization, parametric, and hybrid covers) aligned to the needs of underserved women and youth.
- Support product adaptation across multiple use cases, including: Climate and agricultural risk; Health and hospitalization cover; Emerging digital and payment‑linked insurance models, including stablecoin‑enabled or digital payout mechanisms where relevant.
- Ensure products are: Commercially viable; Scalable through regulated financial institutions; Simple, transparent, and trusted by clients
- Technical Advisory to Financial Institutions & Insurers
- Provide hands‑on advisory support to partner insurers, MFIs, banks, SACCOs, and fintechs on: Product pricing and premium structures; Claims design and payout mechanics; Distribution and partnerships (e.g., FSP–insurer–technology provider models)
- Support partner institutions to strengthen insurance operations, including underwriting, claims management, consumer disclosure, and customer education.
- Market, Regulatory & Ecosystem Engagement
- Conduct market and regulatory assessments related to insurance and risk transfer mechanisms in project countries.
- Engage with regulators, insurers, and industry bodies to support: Regulatory compliance; Product approvals; Alignment with national insurance and financial inclusion strategies.
- Advise project teams on regulatory considerations for digital insurance innovations, including alternative payout rails where applicable.
- Integration with Digital Financial Services
- Support integration of insurance products with digital wallets, payments, savings, and credit, including emerging digital rails where appropriate.
- Advise on customer journeys that link insurance to broader financial resilience pathways (e.g., savings buffers, emergency liquidity, climate resilience tools).
- Knowledge Products & Capacity Building
- Contribute to the development of toolkits, replication guides, and advisory frameworks for partner institutions and ecosystem actors.
- Support training and capacity‑building efforts for partner staff on inclusive insurance design and delivery.
- Provide technical inputs into donor‑facing deliverables (concept notes, reports, case studies, implementation plans).
Required Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Advanced degree in Insurance, Actuarial Science, Finance, Economics, or a related field.
- 12+ years of professional experience in insurance, with demonstrated expertise in at least two of the following:
- Health and hospitalization insurance
- Agricultural and climate risk insurance
- Microinsurance or inclusive insurance models
- Parametric or index‑based insurance
- Strong experience working with insurers, reinsurers, MFIs, banks, or fintechs in emerging markets.
- Proven track record of taking insurance products from concept to launch and scale.
- Solid understanding of insurance regulation and supervision in Sub‑Saharan Africa.
- Experience working on donor‑funded or advisory projects is strongly preferred.
Key Competencies
- Deep technical insurance expertise combined with commercial and operational pragmatism
- Ability to translate complex insurance concepts into clear, implementable solutions
- Strong stakeholder management skills across insurers, FSPs, regulators, and donors
- Comfort working across multiple projects simultaneously
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including contribution to high‑quality donor deliverables
Preferred Experience (Asset)
- Experience with digital insurance distribution, embedded insurance, or mobile‑based insurance models
- Familiarity with climate finance and resilience programming
- Experience designing low‑ticket, high‑volume health or hospitalization products
- Exposure to innovative payout mechanisms or digital payment infrastructure
Engagement Modality
- Consultant / advisory engagement, with the possibility of multi‑year, multi‑project support.
- Expected to contribute across several WWB insurance initiatives, with time allocation agreed on a project‑by‑project basis.
