As women increasingly rely on mobile phones, digital payments, messaging apps, and online marketplaces to manage their businesses and financial lives, technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV) is becoming both a safety risk and a barrier to economic participation. Harassment, impersonation, privacy violations, financial coercion, and other digitally enabled harms can undermine women’s trust in, and use of digital financial services.
In this episode of Making Finance Work for Women, we speak with Lilian Olivia Orero, Founder of SafeOnline Women Kenya (SOW-Kenya), whose work sits at the intersection of law, technology, and gender. Drawing on SOW-Kenya’s digital-safety education, survivor-centered support and technology, and policy advocacy, Lilian shares what women in Kenya are experiencing online, how TFGBV can limit their confidence and participation in digital spaces, and what practical responses can help prevent harm and support survivors.
