NAME OF ACTIVITY:  Data Analysis 

TIME PERIOD: September 1 through December 15

About 1 billion women remain outside of the formal financial system. Women’s World Banking designs and invests in the financial solutions, institutions, and policy environments in emerging markets to create greater economic stability and prosperity for women, their families and their communities. Women’s World Banking’s research team is composed of four people trained in both qualitative and quantitative analysis. The team uses a variety of data including survey responses (sourced by Women’s World Banking and other institutions), administrative data from financial service providers, qualitative data from participatory and semi-structured interviews, and other sources. The team uses these data sources to draw inferences about women’s access to and use of formal financial services in emerging markets. These insights inform the organization’s strategic direction and influence in the financial inclusion community.

The team is looking for a volunteer who can assist with data analysis that leads to insights on financial inclusion. The data analysis process includes receiving the data, cleaning it, creating summary statistics, structuring it in a way that others can read and analyzing it, finding and explaining anomalies and outliers, and applying various models to draw conclusions. The team uses these insights to draft reports that include data and information visualization, compelling narratives, and accompanying collateral like blog posts, executive summaries, and social media-ready insights.

Roles and Responsibilities
The volunteer with undertake the following, working 20 hours per week:

  • Literature reviews on topics related to women’s financial inclusion
  • Data cleaning
  • Data structuring
  • Create data dashboards
  • Data analysis
  • Data and information visualization
  • Draft sections of reports and insight documents
  • Work with team to create blog posts, executive summaries, and social media-ready insights
  • Other duties as required

Qualified candidates will have:

  • Background or education in data analysis
  • Demonstrated ability to identify compelling trends in the data and compose a narrative
  • The ability to work remotely, at least at the beginning of the volunteer engagement, because Women’s World Banking has moved to a remote work model as of 3/14/2020 due to COVID-19
  • Adequate computer equipment during remote work including data analysis software such as Stata or R
