Women’s World Banking seeks an experienced leader for its communications and marketing function to help us reach and influence stakeholder groups critical to our mission to include millions more women in the formal financial system. This is a leadership role within the Advocacy and Influence group, and reports directly to the Global Head of Advocacy, working alongside directors of Research and Advocacy and Policy Advocacy among others to help create an integrated and aligned global advocacy function.

Communications and Marketing function’s purpose is to help the organization reach its target audiences (financial service providers, policymakers, donors) and lead the organization’s thought leadership work on women’s financial inclusion. The director’s role will be to set communications strategy aligned with the organizational and Advocacy function’s goals; manage a team of five (with potential for growth) global marcoms professionals and agency support; partner with other Advocacy functions and broader teams to help Women’s World Banking “show up” in the right places and own important narratives; lead C-suite executive profiling; and manage the daily processes of a busy and in-demand function.

The role requires a strong all-rounder who can both strategize and implement. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of team leadership, an understanding for how to communicate complex research, trends and insights, an awareness of different influence channels, and world-class writing capabilities, and will relish getting into the weeds with the team to deliver great work.



  • Working with the Advocacy leadership, create, embody and execute the global Advocacy and Influence strategy, translating goals into a clear communications and marketing strategy that enables us to show up at the right times with the right messages
  • Manage and develop a team of talented communications and marketing professionals covering events and convening, general communications and digital marketing
  • Lead and mentor the team by guiding priorities, sustaining professional development and supporting daily activities
  • Identify and manage a strong pipe of suppliers including media relations firms, freelance writers and designers
  • Counsel and lead the office of the CEO and C-suite in the creation and implementation of executive engagement plans across owned, earned and shared channels
  • Create and implement strong communications process and structure to manage workloads against resource while maintaining high quality outputs


Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 10 years of communications, content production and marketing in financial services, B2B or advocacy organizations
  • At least 3 years in a people management role with experience creating development plans, setting priorities, providing feedback, mentoring, and delegating workloads
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills with proven abilities in conflict resolution, interpreting ambiguity and navigating competing objectives
  • A track record of working with senior leaders and C-suite
  • A proven ability to assess structures, suppliers and processes critically in order to continuously improve them
  • Self-starter with ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams. Experience collaborating with and integrating global, multicultural teams, both internal and external.
  • Excellent writer (a writing test will be given) and editor with great attention to detail
  • Track record of media relations in one or more markets
  • Ability to bring new creative ideas to communicating our work
  • Strong project management and problem solving skills – a track record of working in a complex organization with multiple stakeholders is important


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Industry experience in PR agency, financial services, B2B, financial inclusion or advocacy organizations with a global lens
  • Product marketing experience, preferably in a technology or financial services environment
  • Fluency in another language



Within the first 75 days:

  • Embrace Women’s World Banking’s core values and desired behaviors;
  • Understand the Women’s World Banking organizational strategy, brand guidelines and messaging
  • Develop relationships with cross-functional teams and with social marketing and events colleagues
  • Formulate a strategic approach to communications at Women’s World Banking
  • Assess current collateral, processes and structures with a view to laying out an approach for the next 3-5 years
  • Develop executive engagement plans for C-suite
  • Demonstrate your command for the position and demonstrate progress against other priorities
