Women’s World Banking

Women’s World Banking is the global non-profit devoted to giving more low-income women access to the financial tools and resources essential to their security and prosperity. For more than 35 years we have worked with financial institutions to show them the benefit of investing in women as clients, and as leaders. We equip these institutions to meet women’s needs through authoritative market research, leadership training, sustainable financial products and consumer education. Headquartered in New York, Women’s World Banking works with 39 institutions in 28 countries with a reach of 14 million women to create access to finance on a greater scale than ever before.

Rationale or Purpose of the Assignment 

Women’s World Banking is seeking communications volunteers or interns to support Women’s World Banking’s communications and marketing efforts. Commitments are flexible, however students must commit at least 10 hours a week for a minimum of two months. This internship represents an excellent opportunity for someone interested in learning about careers in non-profit communications. The opportunity is unpaid, however class credit may be an option.

Learning Opportunities

The roles and responsibilities have been structured such that they provide valuable hands-on experience, including published work. Additionally, interns will interact with Women’s World Banking leadership and program staff through “brown bag sessions” where staff will talk about their work and answer questions. Women’s World Banking regularly runs events such as panels and webinars which will be accessible to interns. Other learning opportunities such as “meet and greets” or networking events may arise over the course of the internship as well.

Scope of Work and Responsibilities

Intern will report directly to and will be evaluated by the Senior Associate for Knowledge and Communications. Supervision will come from the Manager for Knowledge and Communications. The intern will have the support of the Knowledge and Communications Team for all projects and will be provided necessary resources or guidance on how to obtain needed resources.

Intern responsibilities include, but are not limited to the activities listed below. Depending on need and interest, certain activities will be performed more than others.

Writing/ Editing

  • Supporting the communications team in delivering high quality content for both the web and print
  • Writing blog posts based on interviews with staff, publications etc.
  • Assisting with keeping website content up-to-date
  • Assist with the development of electronic communications and the implementation of promotional strategies for online communications channels such as Facebook & Twitter
  • Support development and expansion of AdWords campaigns
  • Writing and editing of web stories, press releases, publications, PowerPoint presentations (depending on ability)

Publicity

  • Track media coverage of issues relevant to Women’s World Banking
  • Research media outlets and journalists for potential engagement
  • Help maintain a database of Women’s World Banking media mentions
  • Assist with the development of media events and materials

Administrative

  • SalesForce Reporting
  • General administrative support

Estimated Timetable and Terms

The position is available from May – September, 2014. This is a part-time, unpaid position.

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will have:

  • Enthusiasm for sharing Women’s World Banking’s mission of promoting financial inclusion to a wider audience
  • Ability and desire to learn about a new/specific industry and internal processes;
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines;
  • Ability to write well, incorporating house style;
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • Research skills;
  • Organizational skills;
  • Sense of initiative

Required:

  • Proficiency using advanced functions with Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of Internet and other research tools.

Desired:

  • Previous experience with content management systems (CMS) or willingness to learn
  • Experience in using media research tools
  • Experience in digital media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Pinterest, community management experience a plus
  • Knowledge of MailChimp or other email marketing platform
  • Event planning experience
  • SalesForce, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign and video editing software knowledge or willingness to learn a plus
  • Knowledge of search engine optimization and search engine marketing a plus
