Summary

Women’s World Banking, a leading, global non-profit organization, is building a world where low-income women, their families, businesses, communities, and economies thrive. We drive systems-level change by advocating to policy makers in developing countries to create policies that support women’s financial inclusion, increase gender diversity, and build women’s leadership. We also work on the ground with financial services providers to demonstrate the benefit of investing in women as customers and as leaders.

 

You are a talented professional who is passionate about women’s financial inclusion and economic empowerment and interested in contributing to our growing research portfolio in Southeast Asia. Research is integral to Women’s World Banking’s approach to understanding the financial lives of low-income women in emerging markets and to evaluating the impact of innovative financial solutions on women’s security and prosperity. In an interdisciplinary team of researchers, advocates, designers, and business and product specialists, you will support on three kinds of research projects:

 

1) Quantitative and qualitative research on particularly relevant topics to women’s financial inclusion and women’s economic empowerment;

2) Impact evaluation to rigorously assess the relationship between financial products and women’s economic empowerment; and

3) Customer research and market analysis of key identified women consumers, contributing to the development of products to serve these consumers.

 

This position reports to the Regional Research Lead in Southeast Asia, with responsibility for supporting research in Southeast Asia and around the world. The position is part of the broader global research team, housed under Women’s World Banking’s advocacy vertical. The position is based intentionally in Southeast Asia to have close proximity to Women’s World Banking’s regional work, as the position will support execution of research projects in these markets as well.

 

Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Collaborating and executing on on research design for topical research, impact evaluation, and market research. Such design may include quasi-experimental methods, surveys, targeted administrative data mining, individual interviews, focus groups, mystery shopping, or other methods. They may be short-, medium-, or long-term.
  • Contributing to the design of research instruments such as surveys and discussion guides
  • Brainstorming to develop sampling criteria
  • Assist with hiring data collection firms, translators, and field teams
  • With support, securing IRB approval and monitoring IRB protocol for research studies
  • Training and monitoring field teams to ensure data quality
  • Analyzing data using a range of quantitative research methods to provide data-driven insights. These methods may include descriptive statistics, trend analysis, inferential and regression techniques, clustering or segmentation, predictive analytics, building evidence to support causal relationships, building and utilizing indices or other explanatory tools.
  • Managing, organizing, and maintaining large datasets, understanding and complying with nuanced data ethics and security
  • Participating in occasional internal trainings and workshops as part of capacity building and socialization of research results
  • Contributing to the organization’s research standards, research best practices, and research agenda

 

Qualifications (required):

  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Economics, Development Studies, or other relevant Social Sciences discipline with quantitative training and practical experience in quantitative research
  • Minimum 2 years of experience leveraging social science research tools
  • Research, work, or familiarity with low-income populations in emerging markets
  • Knowledge of experimental and quasi-experimental methods for impact evaluation
  • Past involvement in large-scale surveys, ensuring compliance with rigorous research standards, high quality data, and timely delivery
  • Proficiency in at least one statistical analysis software such as Stata, R, Python, SAS, with proficiency in a second
  • Familiarity or willingness to learn techniques like descriptive statistics, trend analysis, inferential and regression techniques, clustering or segmentation, predictive analytics, building evidence to support causal relationships, building and utilizing indices or other explanatory tools
  • Familiarity or willingness to learn different types of data sets including surveys, public administrative data, and proprietary administrative data spanning multiple time frames
  • Experience with data cleaning, integration and merging, variable construction and database management with one-time and continuous building of datasets
  • Ability to conduct literature reviews and synthesize findings
  • Verbal, written and presentation skills to share with internal and external stakeholders
  • Willingness to take on significant travel (20-30%) to emerging markets to conduct in-field research once it is safe to do so given COVID-19

 

Qualifications (preferred):

  • Ability to work between statistical analysis softwares
  • Experience or knowledge of women’s financial inclusion, women’s economic and empowerment issues, and gender dynamics in emerging markets
  • Track record of effectively supporting or collaborating with cross-functional and multi-cultural teams, in-field clients, key stakeholders and consultants
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments concurrently, perform well under pressure, and meet deadlines while ensuring quality and attention to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and empathy in highly diverse, multicultural environments
