Women’s World Banking is seeking a qualified research consulting firm to conduct qualitative research as well as secure participants for qualitative in-depth interviews throughout Bangladesh for a project beginning in September 2018 and concluding 2019. The consultant firm will secure participants for IDIs based on a pre-specified set of criteria that will be provided by Women’s World Banking specific to a market strategy for mobile money focused on the financial inclusion of women in Bangladesh.

About the Project
Women’s World Banking has been charged with work with a well-known bank in Bangladesh in order to create a market strategy for expansion of their mobile money offerings. The consulting firm with assist Women’s World Banking with assessing and evaluating the bank’s existing customer base via qualitative research to under customer (current and potential) behavior, barriers to adoption, usage and needs. Additionally, the project calls for a full understanding of the environment in which the mobile money operator will be unveiling their market strategy. To that end, we are seeking a research firm that can assist in conducting targeted qualitative research.

Objectives & Responsibilities
The objective of the consultancy is to conduct client-level research through a variety of methodologies, as needed. Research will need to be conducted across all regions of Bangladesh, including rural areas, and may need to be conducted in both English and Bengali. Research projects may include:

  1. Assist in conducting qualitative research in the form of focus groups, individual interviews, behavioral mapping, ethnographies, /or stakeholder interviews.  Firm would be responsible for all logistics of qualitative research (securing space, refreshments, recruitment of participants and incentives).  This may include:
    • Selection, hiring and training of a team of interviewers (meeting language and gender requirements).
    • Collaboration on development of research discussion guides
    • Oversight of and facilitation of focus groups and/or interviews
    • Entering and coding of collected data
    • Collaboration with partners on analysis and report writing of research data.
  2. Conduct quantitative surveys on the phone (including text or robocalls) or in-person with both existing clients and non-clients of financial products. This may include:
    • Collaboration with partners on survey instrument creation, methodology development and analysis.
    • Recruitment of participants
    • Field testing of survey instruments, piloting questions and entering and/or coding data.
    • Collaboration with partners on analysis and report writing of research data.

Duration of Consultancy
Consultants are needed on short-term projects to be conducted between fall 2018 and fall 2019. Consultants will be procured under retainer contracts for the period of one year. Women’s World Banking may extend the contract at the organization’s discretion.

Location of Work
Work will be conducted throughout Bangladesh (including Dhaka as well as rural and remote locations), though specific locations will be determined for specific projects.  Work may include site visits to financial institutions as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience conducting individual-level quantitative and qualitative surveys, including ability to conduct and complete large sample phone surveys within limited time frames. Ability to train enumerators and test surveys.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting different types of qualitative research, including focus groups, individual interviews, ethnographies and behavioral narratives; ability to train enumerators and field guides for interviews.
  • Experience conducting research with low-income participants, and participants with limited to no literacy, particularly with a focus on women.
  • Ability to supply high-quality focus group and interview facilitators across Bangladesh.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead development of survey instruments for individual data collection;
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct analysis of data and report on results

    • CVs of senior staff who will be leading the work, including both quantitative and qualitative leads.
      • With the proposed team, how many interviews can be completed in a day.
      • A description of your system for performing quality control of qualitative research;
    • Availability for the described activities in the time period indicated and list any times when availability is limited
  • Illustrative budget for each type of service (recruitment/logistics, qualitative support, quantitative)
  • At least 3 references
